Avoid Cavities This Holiday Season with Our Family Dental Services in Indianapolis
Many of us have encountered a painful and annoying cavity at some point, and if you haven’t, you’re one lucky duck! Cavities are especially hard to avoid during the holiday season because dessert, candy and sugary foods and drinks are always around! We know that these can be painful and hard to avoid. Prime Smile, your family dental office in Indianapolis, wants you to have all the tips!

A Dentist’s Tips For Avoiding Cavities This Holiday Season

  1. Eat Sweets Shortly After Meals
  • During and after a meal, saliva production is increased. Saliva helps to rid some of the acids that are associated with sugary foods and bacteria that form in your mouth. It also helps to wash out some of the food particles that may be left over and cause a cavity. So, if you want to have dessert this holiday season, make sure to have it in a timely manner!
  1. Dried Foods Are Still Sugar!!
  • Many people turn towards what they believe are healthier alternatives to sugary foods such as candy; however, dried fruits contain just as much sugar which still can cause cavities! Plus, the sticky texture that most dried fruits have can get caught in your teeth and sit there, which enhances the risk of a cavity.
  1. Alcohol Has Sugar Too!
  • Many people indulge in more alcohol during the holiday season, but alcohol actually contains high amounts of sugar content as well. So even if you find yourself not eating dessert, watch out for the amount of alcohol you are drinking, because it could account for the same amount of sugar.

So, how can you take precautions?

  1. Use Fluoride Mouthwash
  2. Watch Your Brushing and Flossing Routine
  3. Drink Water After Alcoholic Beverages
  4. Take It Easy on The Sweets
  • Especially if you are planning to drink alcohol, maybe make a choice between dessert or a drink.
