5 Snacks to Avoid At All Costs - Dentistry for Children in Indianapolis

5 Snacks to Avoid At All Costs - Dentistry for Children in Indianapolis

We have found the absolute worst foods for those pearly whites of yours. As a parent, you always want to ensure you are feeding your children with food that is good and good for them. We want to see them grow healthy and strong too. So take a look at some of the things you might want to skip when getting groceries recommended by the experts in dentistry for children in Indianapolis.

1. High Acid and Citrus “Fruit” Drinks

You know the kind, the sour tasting orange juice substitute that kids just seem to really love. Not only does it contain astounding amounts of sugar, but also all of that acid and citrus can really cause some damage to your teeth and cause cavities and decay. Instead, opt for an all-natural fruit juice, but in moderation. If your kids love the citrus taste, give them an orange instead.

2. Caramels

Those ooey gooey candies are just begging to get stuck in some nice teeth. Once they do, they can stay in there for a long, long time. Especially when someone doesn’t brush their teeth as well as they should. This just becomes an opportunity for bacteria to more acid than normal in a mouth. When sticky foods are consumed, sparingly, make sure flossing is done right after!

3. Sports Drinks

Don’t be fooled, sports drinks really aren’t the best thing to drink after a workout. Or at all really. You’re better off drinking water; trust us experts in dentistry for children in Indianapolis. Sugar is usually the top ingredient listed for these sports drinks. However, there are low sugar options for these. Make sure you always check the nutrition label before you buy it.

4. Ice

This one is a shocker for most people, ice is just water, right? While that is true, ice is also just meant for chilling a drink, not chewing. At the end of the day, ice is a hard substance and it can leave your teeth susceptible to breaking, leaving you toothless or with a chip! We’ve seen many instances of this in dentistry for children in Indianapolis.

5. Lollipops

Lollipops, or what we and Willy Wonka’s dad call them, “cavities on a stick.” We’re not saying don’t ever eat a lollipop! Just don’t make it an even semi-regular habit.  This is like a triple whammy, it’s full of sugar, it’s hard, and it is full of artificial colors that can stain teeth. You could possibly get a cavity, break a tooth, and stain your teeth all at the same time!
