Her name was Amy. She was about 6 years old and entered our office with great apprehension and possibly fear. We were not offended at all, in fact, we understand the dentist office can be a scary and intimidating place. There are unpleasant sounds and some of the techniques do cause some discomfort. Amy seemed to know this— this was not her first rodeo. When we walked her back for a routine checkup, she was reserved to say the least. Her hands were tucked into her pockets, looking at the ground, and she was answering our questions with one-word answers. It became obvious that she was afraid of us. Past experiences rendered, Amy was terrified of the dentist office. Her mother had to switch plans, which meant the loss of her original dentist and the introduction to a new dentist that she was unfamiliar of. However, we pride ourselves on making our patients feel as comfortable as possible. When we started telling jokes, asked questions about school and extracurricular activities, we had her relaxed and ready for her cleaning. Amy was ecstatic that the procedure didn’t hurt and that the dentist and hygienist were as friendly as can be.
Her mother felt relieved that we accept a wide range of insurance plans, including Medicaid. By the end of Amy’s appointment Amy and her mother walked out with smiles on their face ready to take on the day.
