What Dental Services Does Prime Smile Provide?

At Prime Smile, we pretty much offer all-inclusive services for children, all preventive needs, and also any restorative needs that a child might need, extractions, crowns, fillings, space maintainers. We also have an anesthesiologist that comes in once every couple of weeks for the children that can’t cooperate for their dental visit and need a lot of treatment. The anesthesiologist helps us by being able to put the patient to sleep so that the patient doesn’t have to go through a painful appointment.

Dental X-Rays

Dental Radiographs (X-Rays)

Prime smile uses dental x-rays to maximize your care with each visit. Our digital x-rays are quick, painless, and most importantly, thorough. With each visit, we keep a close watch on your teeth both above and below the gumline, allowing us to keep your teeth healthy down to the roots. At Prime Smile, we use digital x-rays for our diagnostic photos. Digital x-rays use much less radiation than traditional film. To ensure the child’s safety, we use a lead apron with a thyroid collar, which absorbs all of the radiation and keeping the patient safe. All of the x-rays are performed by our specially trained staff, using safe and up-to-date equipment.

Sealant Placement

Sealant Placement permanent teeth have large grooves on the occlusal, or biting surface of the tooth. This area is one of the easiest places for cavities to form. At Prime Smile, we offer sealants to protect these areas from forming decay. A sealant is a thin layer of material that is applied directly to the occlusal surface of the molar and premolar teeth. Sealants are quick and easy to place.

First a cleaning agent is applied to the occlusal surface of the tooth. After rinsing the tooth off and keeping a dry surface, the sealant material flows into the grooves, forming a protective layer against bacteria. A bright white curing light dries the material on the occlusal surface and is checked at each six month visit. Daily brushing and flossing will ensure the sealant remains on the tooth for full protection. Chewing on ice and eating sticky candy can pull the material off of the tooth, so these actions should be avoided.

Teeth Cleaning

Fluoride Treatments

Prime Smile utilizes gel and varnish for all our fluoride treatments. We believe the varnish offers not only the best dental care benefits, but is easier and more convenient for your child. Fluoride varnish, which is the most common method, is brushed onto the teeth using a small brush. The varnish mixes with the saliva in the mouth and forms a sticky coating across all of the teeth. The stickiness remains on the teeth for up to 6 hours, when the enamel is remineralized and strengthened by the vitamins in the fluoride varnish. The alternative to the fluoride varnish is the fluoride gel, which instead of brushing onto the tooth surface, is in a gel form, placed in a tray, and sits in the patient’s mouth for up to four minutes. The patient then cannot eat or drink for thirty minutes after the application of the gel fluoride, whereas with the fluoride varnish, the patient can do so right away.

Toothpaste

Soft Tissue Cleaning

The mouth is key to the health of the entire body. Each dental visit is more than brushing and flossing, but it is a glimpse into the body’s health as a whole. Our trained staff examines the teeth, gums, and cheeks looking for abnormal lesions or markings. At Prime Smile, we have a variety of specialists that we refer to, if the lesion appears to be suspicious. Certain lesions can lead to serious diseases, such as oral cancer. With our older patients, we offer tobacco counseling for those who are interested.

Tooth

Dental Restorations (Dental Treatment)

A cavity is bacteria that forms from acid on the surface and causes tooth decay. The decay needs to be removed from the tooth and replaced with a filling. At Prime Smile, we use amalgam (silver) and resin (white) fillings, depending on the severity of the decay. If a cavity is too large to cover with a filling on the tooth, it may require a crown. Prime Smile has different options for dental crowns, depending on the location of the decay in the mouth. For cavities on the back teeth, we place silver crowns, or caps whereas on the front teeth we place resin, or tooth colored crowns. In primary, or baby teeth, it is common to have them extracted, when medically necessary. In some situations, the tooth is not restorable, which means neither a filling nor a crown will help remove the cavity safely. Sometimes a cavity gets too large and causes and infection of the tooth.

The tooth needs to be extracted to prevent infection spreading to the entire mouth, and the rest of the body. Lastly, a primary tooth remains in the mouth too long, and the permanent tooth starts to erupt in the same location. The primary tooth may need to be extracted in order for the permanent tooth to fully erupt. Prime Smile staff will also screen for third molar impaction, or wisdom teeth, which we refer to a specialist for further evaluation and possible extraction. With all of our restorations, Prime Smile offers Nitrous Oxide for patient comfort. Nitrous oxide is a safe sedative that is commonly used in the dental field. The patient breathes in the Nitrous Oxide and is still conscious for the entire procedure. This helps the patient relax and ensures the safety of both the patient and the staff while treatment is completed.
